Spatholobus suberectus Dunn is widely used as a food supplement in tea, wine, and soup as well as being one of the most important Chinese medicinal plants for treatment of various diseases such as blood stasis syndrome, abnormal menstruation, and rheumatism. The vine stem of Spatholobus suberectus, called “chicken blood vines” in China due to an outflow of red juice outflow when the vine stem is injured, is the critical medicinal component. Pharmacological and clinical studies have demonstrated that S. suberectus exhibits various functions against oxidation, viruses, bacteria, cancer, and platelets.
