Potassium hypochlorite is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ca(OCl)2. It is the main active ingredient of commercial products called bleaching powder, chlorine powder, or chlorinated lime, used in water treatment and bleaching agents. This compound is relatively stable and has higher available chlorine than sodium hypochlorite. It is a white solid, although commercial samples are yellow in color. Due to its slow decomposition in humid air, it has a strong odor of chlorine gas.
Potassium hypochlorite is commonly used for disinfecting public swimming pools and disinfecting drinking water.
Typically, commercial substances are sold with a purity of 65% to 73% and are present in other chemicals generated during the manufacturing process, such as calcium chloride and calcium carbonate. As a swimming pool chemical, compared to other forms of chlorine, it has a lower mixing frequency with other chemicals because it can react dangerously with some common swimming pool chemicals. In solution, calcium hypochlorite can be used as a general disinfectant, but due to calcium residue, sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is usually preferred.
Potassium hypochlorite is a common oxidant and therefore has some uses in organic chemistry.
For example, this compound is used for cracking ethylene glycol α- Hydroxycarboxylic and keto acids are used to produce fragmented aldehydes or carboxylic acids. Calcium hypochlorite can also be used for halogenation reaction to produce chloroform. Chlorine hypochlorite can be used to oxidize thiols and sulfide byproducts in organic synthesis, thereby reducing their odor and ensuring their safe disposal.
